Continued.

Tenerife is known as 'the Canary with everything' and that helps to explain why holidays to Tenerife are so popular. Whether you're looking for a summer or winter holiday to Tenerife a good time is guaranteed for all. Tenerife is great for kids with its water parks and amusements whilst adults will enjoy the island's varied resorts and fabulous scenery.

And, if there's one thing that really characterises holidays to Tenerife, it's the year round sunshine. Tenerife's year round sunshine record means that the island always in demand. Tenerife may be closer to Africa than Spain but the atmosphere is definitely Spanish - relaxed and unhurried by day, the pace hots up as the sun goes down.'

With sun-baked sandy beaches and lively bars and nightclubs, the south coast of Tenerife feels a million miles away from the lush banana plantations and cosmopolitan towns of the north of the island. In fact, Tenerife is only 90 kilometres from north to south, but majestic Mount Teide cuts the island into two very distinct zones, giving Tenerife two very different characters. Step away from the holiday resorts and Tenerife's Spanish heritage reveals itself in sleepy whitewashed plazas and tiny Spanish tapas bars, in fun-loving fiestas and elegant colonial buildings.

Tenerife is dominated by the mountains that divide the island into the south and north. At just over 12,000 feet, the volcanic Mount Teide, in Las Canadas National Park, is the highest mountain in Spain and has a cable car which runs almost to the top.

Tenerife beaches

Whether it's bustling beaches with plenty of watersports, or peaceful retreats where you can relax with a good book, there's something for everyone. Playa de las Americas has three dark sandy beaches, and three man-made ones, all with crystal clear seas that are perfect for watersports. Purpose-built in the 1960's, it's packed with bars, restaurants and clubs. In contrast, Los Gigantes is a fairly secluded spot.  Here you'll find black sand and clear waters, perfect for paddling and snorkelling. Up on the lush northern coast, Puerto de la Cruz is a beach resort that's high on charm. This is where the first holidaymakers came, along with today's tourists who still head for the three beaches along the rocky coastline. For sand-free sunbathing, head to the lovely Lido Martianez, where saltwater lagoons are surrounded by terraces and dotted with lava rock islands.

Eating out in Tenerife

The amount of restaurants offering international cuisine means it can be harder to find some of the real Spanish eateries. But if you're keen to track down where the locals eat, keep your eyes peeled for some of the 'Guachinches'. These little places are dotted along the roads of Tacoronte, Acentejo and surrounding la Laguna. On the simple menus you'll find fresh caught seafood dishes like, samu. This popular meal is baked fish on a bed of salt, with a small jacket potato and mojo, a spicy garlic sauce. Other tasty treats include chunky casseroles, thick soups and meaty pork dishes. If you prefer something a tad more global, you're in good hands. A huge amount of restaurants offer international cuisine, like Indian, Chinese and Lebanese. Of course, a large portion of the island caters for those who like nothing more than the good ol' taste of England.

Night life on Tenerife

When it comes to lively nights abroad, Ibiza tends to hog the limelight. But Tenerife has got enough bars and clubs to give the party isle a run for its money. The hedonistic Playa de las Americas is packed full of 24 hour party people dancing to the hottest djs spinning the latest sounds. The list of superstars who've manned the decks read like a who's who of clubland. From the good times of Danny Rampling to the fierce thump of Carl Cox, it's not just Ibiza that draws the big names. Just as popular but not as wild, Puerto de la Cruz also has its own fair share of pubs, clubs and restaurants. For something a bit different, don your tuxedo and indulge your James Bond fantasies at Casino Taoro, one of Europe's most luxurious casinos. In contrast to the party atmosphere, Los Cristianos is an altogether calmer affair. It's out with all night foam parties and in with cosmopolitan pavement cafes and harbour side restaurants.

Shopping on Tenerife

Everyone loves a bargain, so Tenerife is a shopaholic's dream come true. Unlike the eye-watering prices of the UK, this place has tax-free shopping, so you can afford to go wild in the aisles and pick up perfumes and spirits at rock-bottom prices. The areas around Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz are chock full of department stores and shops, offering everything from cheap clothes to mobile phones at huge discounts. For something a tad more traditional, go for the smaller village shops where you can pick up some of the local crafts. Look out for some of Tenerife's unusual pottery, which is made without a potter's wheel and decorated with bold, tribal designs. Of course it's not only shops where you can pick up souvenirs. You're bound to stumble across a craft fair, so take the time to browse the selection of wickerwork baskets and knick-knacks.

The resort of Puerto De La Cruz boasts stunning views of Mount Teide, a picturesque waterfront and excellent shopping and entertainment. Here you can stroll through the old town, replete with balustraded wooden balconies, beside the main square.

Holidays in Puerto de la Cruz were pulling people in even before tourism had been invented. And it's still going strong today. Come and find out why. Parts of this once small fishing village are still the same. Fisherman bring in their daily harvest. Typically Canarian houses line the streets and normal life flourishes in this hilly town. And yet, tourism has taken off too. No wonder Puerto de la Cruz's holidays are as popular as ever.

Just 35km from Santa Cruz, this picturesque town is full of attractions popular with the Spanish and visitors alike. Beyond it are yet more. Loro Park is famous for its parrots and dolphin performances and the 18th century Jardin de Aclimatacion, between Puerto de la Cruz and Orotava, houses a variety of plants from all over the world. "

The old town of Puerto de la Cruz, centred around the small fishing port, remains remarkably unchanged. Old houses in the traditional Canarian style and the fishermen landing their catches give Puerto de la Cruz a charming atmosphere. The old town of Puerto de la Cruz, centred around the small fishing port, remains remarkably unchanged.

Puerto de la Cruz beaches

The rocky coast with its three small black sand beaches. Playa de las Teresitas with imported Sahara sand. Or the 'au naturale' Las Gavistas for that all over tan. Maybe it's Lago de Martianez – a huge saltwater lido with 8 pools, bars and restaurants.

Eating out in Puerto de la Cruz

You'll find plenty of restaurants, especially in the small streets leading off the Avendida de Colon. Try local specialities such as 'cocido canario', a robust beef stew, or sample fresh goats cheese from the spa town of Vilaflor.

Out and about in Puerto de la Cruz

The Loro Parque is a man-made nature paradise in Puerto de la Cruz. It houses a shark tunnel and is home to the largest collection of parrots in the world in addition to hosting dolphin, parrot and sea-lion shows plus the latest exhibition, Planet Penguin, with over 200 Antarctic and tropical penguins. On arrival, the visitor is met with a beautiful Thai village set on a lake. Inside you can admire the jungle-like gorilla enclosure and Orchid House, plus lots more!

Or explore the spectacular volcanic landscapes of the Parque Nacional del Teide and the peak of Mount Teide itself - a cable car takes you almost to the top in just eight minutes.

Holidays in Playa de las Americas have got it all. Pack your days full of jet ski rides, beach volleyball andyour nights with karaoke, cocktails and cabaret. Playa de las Americas holidays have got seaside sparkle by the bucket load. Away from the sand there are water parks, spas and even a casino begging to be explored.

And there are plenty of restaurants too. Tantalising tapas, mouth-watering Moroccan and tasty tandoori rub shoulders with fast food joints, steakhouses and British pubs. Full of modern restaurants, bars and hotels, it is lively and fun, its large white sandy beach attracting people from all over the island. Just around the coastline is the beautiful beach of El Medano, famed for its windsurfing."

Playa de las Americas, 17.5km south of Reina Sofia airport, is a modern playground with an international atmosphere perfect for families as well as young couples and groups of friends. The beaches are popular, water sports are brilliant and there's a water park. There is an 18 hole golf course with views towards the resort centre and the sea, an ideal location made even more attractive for a round of golf as it is protected from the wind by a mountain range nearby.

There are three dark sandy beaches, Playa del Bobo and the two Playas de Troya. They are very popular in high season and offer a wide range of watersports. There are also three fabulous man-made beaches situated in the Fanabe area of Playa de las Americas and out towards Playa del Duque.

As well as several golf courses to sample around Playa de las America, you can visit Mount Teide (El Pico), the 12,402 foot volcanic mountain which towers above the island, discover the lush Oratava Valley or the lunar deserted volcanic stretches towards the south. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, so there is plenty to explore.

A holiday in Los Cristianos is everything you would expect from a holiday in Tenerife with an added touch of sophistication. Just south of Playa De Las Americas you're close enough to the action of the buzzing resort if you fancy a bit more activity of an evening without it being right on your doorstep.

You will find heaps to keep you occupied on your summer holiday to Los Cristianos The old town is full of little shops, bars and cafes to while away the hours on a sunny afternoon. Don't forget to check out the market held in the town every Sunday, you're sure to pick up a holiday bargain or two.

Los Cristianos beaches

Los Cristianos is home to a gently shelving sweep of dark sand that's perfect for sunbathing on. The calm waters in the sheltered bay are great to cool down in.

Night life in Los Cristianos

Nightlife here is relaxed and the bars and restaurants are more suited to couples than those after a merry night on the town.

Take a leisurely stroll to Playa de las Americas for livelier music, bars and nightclubs.

Out and about in Los Cristianos

Catch a ferry to the unspoilt island of La Gomera or try the old town of Los Cristianos' tempting selection of bars and shops.

Tennis, squash, mini golf and a gymnasium are also on offer for those who like a more active holiday.

Shopping in Los Cristianos

The old town of Los Cristianos boasts a good range of shops and bazaars.

Holidays in Costa Adeje are ideal for those looking for a happy medium between bustling and secluded resorts. With the spectacular sight of Mount Teide forming the back drop you may well be surprised to find a modern resort in such a natural setting. Just 3 km from Playa De Las Americas you'll find yourself in a resort that's quieter than its neighbour but still with plenty to offer. This of course could be what appeals to you about a holiday in Costa Adeje, a smaller resort that's still close to all the nightlife and action of a busier resort.

On the north coast of Tenerife, between Puerto De La Cruz and Santa Cruz, is the picturesque town of El Sauzal. Surrounded by the steep, fertile and green slopes of one of the island's prime wine-growing areas, this old and charming town shows traditional Tenerife at its very best. If you're looking for a large helping of traditional Tenerife, take a look at holidays to El Sauzal.

El Sauzal is renowned throughout Tenerife for its fine wines and superb restaurants that serve typical Canarian cuisine. Wander around the town and its streets are full of traditional architecture and buildings like the church of Los Angeles that goes back to the 16th century. Just outside the town is another famous landmark: the 17th century hacienda of Casa del Vino la Baranda which now houses a wine showcase and museum. And a few minutes beyond El Sauzal is Mesa del Mar, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and the small fishing village of El Prix where you can eat freshly caught fish.

This little gem has got charm. Lose yourself in the tangle of old streets crammed with beautiful architecture or pull up a chair in a backstreet bar and sip the superb local wine. Sunbathe to your heart's content at nearby Mesa del Mar. It's easy to see how El Sauzal holidays can leave you smitten. With attractions nearby including caves and beaches as well as the larger towns on the island, it is an ideal place to stay and relax or venture out from.

Guia de Isora give you chance to relax. A picture postcard village set against a stunning backdrop of mountains, you'll find a peaceful pace of life in friendly Guia de Isora. It is a typically Canarian bolthole where days drift by with blissful disregard for the ticking clock. Here, it's all about lazy days in the sun, soul-restoring coastal walks, and tasty home-cooking in traditional little restaurants.

Sitting near Tenerife's west coast, this is an unspoilt area that's been pretty much missed off the tourism list, so if you've come to Tenerife for its lively nightlife, then this won't be your cup of tea. But if low-key charm is high on your list of priorities, this is the place. Lie back and relax on the nearby beach – one of the isle's best and listen to the soothing sound of the soft surf washing the sands.

Spectacular vistas are on tap here too, with views stretching out over the sparkling Atlantic Ocean as far as the island of La Gomera. Take a gentle stroll along the coastline and you'll see the views at their shining best – just don't forget to take your camera. There's a liberal sprinkling of shops, with supermarkets for all the necessities plus some pretty souvenir shops and don't miss the hustle and bustle of the local produce market held on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. You'll also come across plenty of restaurants where you can tuck into traditional island as well as international food.

If you want to pick up the pace, locally there's tennis, golf, fishing and water parks, plus the bustling resorts of Los Gigantes and Playa De Las Americas. Or jump aboard a leisurely ferry ride to the neighbouring islands of Gran Canaria and La Gomera for a delightful day out to remember.

Holidays in Los Gigantes mean glittering sands and sparkling sea. Breathtaking beauty and brilliant sunshine. When you get to Los Gigantes, you'll realise how this tranquil town got its name. There's no looming high rise hotels here – instead, dramatic cliffs, or 'The Giants', are the backdrop to the whitewashed hotels that nestle beneath them. A truly stunning setting. The unique beach of black volcanic sand is skirted by beachside bars. And the modern marina offers everything from diving to dinner.

Los Gigantes holidays are about making the most of this picturesque coast. Which means stretching out in the endless sunshine. Or sailing out to spot whales and dolphins. Waterskiing, jet skis, banana boats and parascending are all on offer – you name it, they do it down at the marina. Dive into a world of dashing colours under the sea. Head out on a fishing trip. Or explore the off-shore caves and secluded beaches on a cruise. You can embark on a boat trip to spot whales and dolphins. But even if you don't spot a whale, the sight of the awesome cliffs of Los Gigantes are just as impressive.

When it comes the evening, Los Gigantes keeps it low key. Your dinner menu includes everything from English grub to Mexican cuisine, at restaurants dotted throughout the winding streets and along the marina. Drink in the balmy air and a local beer at a seafront bar. Los Gigantes is situated in a stunning location on the southwest of the island. The little beach of black volcanic sand is cosseted by cliffs and the clear waters are excellent for snorkelling. The marina is lined with bars and restaurants and the nightlife here is low-key ideal for those seeking a more relaxing holiday. This is a good base for exploring more of Tenerife and a trek through the incredible scenery of the Masca Valley is a must. Some parts of the resort are hilly in nature and may be unsuitable for those who are less mobile.

Playa de la Arena is symbolised by plunging cliffs that'll take your breath away, a spotless sweep of sprawl-on-me sand and some of the best tapas around. Compared with Playa De Las Americas, this place drifts along in a peaceful slumber, but that's where the appeal lies. It's pretty, it's relaxing and it's ideal if you're looking to chill out in the sun.

Why not take a shopping trip with a difference? The Wednesday farmer's market at Playa San Juan sells a wealth of local produce, while the Monday market at Alcala is the place to go for African crafts.

Playa de la Arena beaches

Playa de la Arena has a small, natural beach of black sand and is one of the cleanest on the island - it has even won the European Blue Flag for cleanliness. If you hire a car there is ample free parking on the top of the beach with a short footpath down to the sand. There are also plenty of bars, restaurants and tavernas adjacent to the beach, so you need not venture far if you get thirsty or hungry.

Out and about in Playa de la Arena

For a relatively small resort, Playa de la Arena boasts an extensive array of bars and restaurants, ranging from the big and bold to a handful of small and intimate venuesPlaya de la Arena boasts a good range of restaurants covering a variety of cuisines. You will find a Thai restaurant, an informal pizzeria, a steak house and a sophisticated restaurant specialising in Austrian cuisine.

Playa Paraiso is a bit of a cheeky name for this resort because the beach really isn't much – a small rocky patch of coast. But they've made up for it with the super saltwater lido, the centre of resort life. For water sports and sand, head off to Playa De Las Americas and Los Cristianos courtesy of public buses.

Puerto de Santiago is one of those resorts you either use to come home to after a day out or where you settle in for a sun tan. On Tenerife's quieter west coast, it's snuggled between Los Gigantes and Playa De La Arena. Famed for its natural beauty and popular for its relative calm, this coastal cluster of resorts is only a short drive away from the bright lights and loud beats of Playa De Las Americas.

San Miguel de Abona holidays will change your mind about Tenerife. The centre of the southern region that shares its name, San Miguel de Abona is one of the island's oldest towns. Narrow streets, classic Canarian styles and a beautiful eighteenth century church.

The knights of Castillo San Miguel stage weekly jousts which start with sword fighting and spear-throwing and end in a medley of music and medieval feasting.

Explore the fertile hills on foot or on horseback. Nearby Mount Teide is Spain's highest peak, but the closer Mirador de la Centinela offers spectacular views too. The prehistoric cave dwellings of Barranco de la Tafetana fire the imagination. Prefer your rolling hills complete with a nineteenth hole? Head to Golf del Sur or Amarilla Golf. All this without a grain of sand or a swig of beer - though Playa De Las Americas is only a short drive away for a day at the beach or a night on the town.

San Miguel de Abona's evenings revolve around eating out. There is plenty to do and discover such as local fishing villages, traditional markets with an abundance of fresh produce, unspoilt country walks, hiking and picnicing, as well as windsurfing, countless watersports, the golf courses of Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf, horse riding, carnivals - even rally car racing in the mountains during September.

If you're a fan of golf, holidays to Amarilla Golf are the stuff of dreams. The course here's a championship gem, sandwiched between sparkling ocean rollers and majestic Mount Teide. Picture yourself, teeing off in a sensational setting like that, Tenerife's trademark sunshine lighting up the scene. Look out for the 5th hole. Here, the sea becomes a fairway, making it necessary to cross it in order to reach the green. There's a handful of shops, bars and restaurants in the resort but for more choice head for Los Cristianos. It's just a ten minute drive away and has gorgeous golden beaches thrown into the mix
