Ferry takes 20 minutes to Zadar. Ferry port is in the old town, so you dont need a car for a tourist tour thru town. Throughout history, Zadar and its surroundings have witnessed many turbulent events which made Zadar a sort of a city – museum. The nucleus of the city developed in Roman times, whose legacy is still visible today in the remains of the Roman Forum, temple with a portico, aqueduct, amphitheatre, cemetery, city walls with forts and many city gates. The most famous monument and a symbol of the city is the church of St. Donatus from the 9th century which was built on the remains of the ancient Roman Forum. One of distinguished sacral monuments is also the Cathedral of St. Anastasia with a bell tower which dominates the peninsula. St. Mary’s church from the 11th century belongs to a Benedictine monastery of the same name, which keeps a valuable collection of medieval charters mentioning 11th century Croatian kings. Many sacral monuments of the Zadar area exist today owing to the historical course of events. Medieval Zadar with various churches and monasteries was a Christian centre of Dalmatia. The Zadar region offers numerous curiosities. Thanks to its rich historical legacy and various events that took place in this area, some curiosities date back to ancient times, while some are relatively recent, following the spirit and tradition of enriching the values of the city and its surroundings. One of its many attractions is a well-known Sea Organ, which is definitely a must-see, and a spatial installation “The Greeting to the Sun”, both constructed according to the project made by architect Nikola Basic. Some of Zadar’s landmarks are boat rowers taxis (barkajoli) and Kalelarga, a street older than the city itself. The silver chest of Saint Simeon is definitely worth seeing, and liqueur Maraschino is known worldwide. The triangle of Pag is a world phenomenon which will make your experience of this region complete. Zadar is a city of picturesque scenery. Its exceptional location on a flat peninsula in the middle of the Mediterranean gives the town a certain particularity. A walk around the whole peninsula along a paved promenade offers an unforgettable view over the islands, especially at sunset. The natural characteristics of the Zadar region comprise 1.200 kilometers of pictorial and clean coastline, the grandeur of around 300 islands and islets, and 3.640 square kilometers of the hinterland. The special feature of the Zadar region lies in the fact that it is surrounded by 5 National Parks: Paklenica, Kornati, Plitvica Lakes, Krka Waterfalls and Northern Velebit. It takes only an hour by car or by boat (for Kornati national park) to all the national parks. We use to say " Come and see Mediterrian as it once was".
