Nerja is blooming – that captures both the beauty of the place and its success with the tourist trade. Large hotels line the multitude of beaches. Winding roads brim with people in the old town. Life takes a lazy stroll along beautiful Balcon de Europa, Nerja's stunning promenade and centre.
Sitting at the foot of the Almijara mountains, surrounded by agricultural activity, Nerja is planted in the middle of a huge, sweet-smelling garden of exotic fruits.
Nerja retains a charm for the more
discerning traveller, with a spectacular coastline and rocky coves. As
night falls, there is a wide variety of cosmopolitan restaurants and bars,
centred around the scenic viewpoint, the Balcón de Europa. Head for the
Tuesday morning market or the winding streets in the town centre to browse
for gifts and souvenirs.
There are several beaches in Nerja - Burriana beach, which is lined by an attractive promenade, is the biggest and most popular. All have sand and pebble swathes, excellent cafes and stunning views. It's easy to spend an entire day hopping from beach to beach, swimming in clear, warm waters and eating delicious paella washed down with icy, soft drinks.
One of the vast caverns has been converted into an auditorium - if you're lucky enough to be in Nerja during a concert, you'll be witness to an unforgettable occasion.
Inland, the quaint village of Frigiliana provides a nice contrast to life on the beach with its traditional whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. For many, the small village of Frigiliana is, quite simply, quintessential Andalucia. Perched high up on a rocky hilltop, Frigiliana is a traditional, whitewashed Spanish village complete with steep cobbled streets, Moorish houses and colourful flowers that cascade gracefully over wrought iron balconies. The village's picturesque location provides a peaceful and relaxed backdrop for those looking to engage with real Spain.
With breathtaking views of the Mediterranean
sea, the Almijara nature reserve and the eastern Malaga coast, Frigiliana
is one of the most picturesque villages in Andalusia. Set amongst the
mountains of the Sierra Almijara, this beautiful area of sunny hills and
pretty villages is filled with avocado, mango and cane plantations as well
as olives, almonds and vineyards. Frigiliana itself has a rich history and
beautiful scenery but all around it are places to visit that are just as
fascinating.
Frigiliana is best explored by foot. There are several buses a day that run from Nerja or, alternatively, leave your car at the car park at the bottom of the hill.
Torrox, a very white town with 12000 inhabitants, is 45 km. away from Malaga and 20 from Velez and sheltered from the Northern winds by the mountains of Tejeda. Still untouched by tourist development you can truly appreciate the Spanish way of life you can find popular architecture such as the Moorish Quarter and wine and raisin presses and interesting industrial architecture such as the Sugar Factory.
It has three main centres - Torrox Costa and El Morche on the coast, and Torrox Pueblo 4 kilometres inland and 125 metres above sea level. Torrox Pueblo has retained its white Moorish village structure with attractive narrow streets and a main square which is a lively meeting place. Much of the town has beautiful views down to the coast. There was once a Moorish castle on top of the hill on which the town stands where, it is claimed, King Almanzor was born in the 10th century.
For a taste of traditional Spanish life, try Competa. If you want to explore further afield, Granada is a spectacular destination with the Alhambra Palace as its impressive focal point. Discover Seville, sparkling capital of Andalucía and home of the Giralda Cathedral and Terra Mítica Theme Park
Venture inland to sugar cube Ronda, with its magnificent bridge spanning dizzying heights over the El Tajo gorge. Set sail for Gibraltar, a little piece of Britain in southern Spain, with its resident Barbary apes and fantastic views of the African coastline.
