Sitting pretty in the turquoise seas of the Med, this low-key isle isn't perhaps as well-known as the mainland Costa's but it should be. Peace and quiet go hand-in-hand here for a start. Then there are the bounty-like beaches, of which Minorca has more than its Balearic cousins put together. And let's not forget the fact that it's also an open-air museum with its megalithic monuments.
Binibeca is crammed full of authentic
Minorcan charm. Stretching along the incredibly pretty coastline into
Binisafua and Binnidali, this architecturally acclaimed village is
sure to wow the flip-flops off you. It was built by Antoni Sintes who
wanted to create an authentic Minorcan fishing village. And that he most
certainly did. From the whitewashed sugar-cubed houses to the labyrinthine
cobbled lanes, Binibeca holidays take you back to yesteryear.
One of Minorca's first resorts, Binisafua is a village of villas and pools. Which means despite generations of sun seekers spending their summers here, Binisafua has escaped concrete towers and kept it low key. You can try out a bit of snorkelling, splash about on the pedaloes? Or you could find a secluded spot in one of the coves nearby. Then there's the big beach at Punta Prima and Cala Torret dive centre is the best place to go to explore the clear waters around Binisafua. See a different side of Minorca with flying lessons or flying tours at San Lluis Aero Club and Hippodrome – or there's go-karting here too. How about a horseriding at Stables Farm near Sant Clement? Want less of adrenalin rush? The prehistoric settlements of Torre d'en Gaumes and Calas Coves or the beautiful Minorcan town of Binibeca Vell may be more your pace.
With the largest and what's considered by
many to be the best beach in Minorca, holidays in Son Bou almost
sell themselves. Son Bou holidays are ideal for families due to the
abundance of facilities and family-friendly hotels, but couples also flock
here to make the most of the gloriously uncrowded beach, the range of
water sports, including scuba diving, and the lively bars.
Cala Blanca- a name and resort
inspired by two stunning white beaches. Soft sloping sand, sheltering in
rugged coves, lapped by a transparent Mediterranean. Not even watersports
disturb the calm. It's all about snorkels, goggles and scuba gear here
with a dive centre to dish out the goods. Of course, there's always
straight forward sunbathing too.
Cala'n Bosch is tucked away on the
southwest tip of Minorca, 8km from the historic city of Ciutadella. Set
around two sandy coves, Cala'n Bosch is an attractive, purpose-built
resort, the focal point of which is a pleasant yachting marina. A
sprinkling of shops, bars and restaurants dot the resort and the gentle
pace of life and tranquil atmosphere suit older couples and families
seeking a peaceful holiday. Situated 50km from Mahon and 5km west of the former capital, Ciudadela, on a dramatic rocky headland, Cala'n Forcat is considered to be Minorca's liveliest resort. However, Minorca's answer to Magaluf it is not and herein lies its appeal, as far as most are concerned. You'll still find cheap snack bars, English theme pubs and karaoke dens, but it's a lot more low-key in comparison with its bustling Balearic neighbour.
Santo Tomas resort focuses on the
three Rs – relaxation, relaxation and relaxation! In fact it's difficult
to do anything but relax in this quiet, laid back resort. With two long
sandy beaches, it should come as no surprise that Santo Tomas holidays are
all about sun, sea and sand.
Arenal d'en Castell centres around
the much photographed sweeping horseshoe-shaped sandy bay. Travel to
Arenal d'en Castell and you'll soon see why. Fringed by pine woodland, its
warm, shallow waters are particularly popular with families with young
children and couples can take to the water with a range of water sports.
Cala Galdana bay is considered one of the most beautiful coves in the western Mediterranean. It is protected by high cliffs and there's shade from fragrant pine trees that surround this attractive hideaway. Cala Galdana is also an ideal starting point for many walks along the picturesque south coast towards Mahon. Cala Galdana is hard to beat for a relaxing holiday and also offers water sports and tennis courts.
