Ambling through the web of narrow cobbled
streets of Mijas it is easy to see why so many visitors decided to
settle here, muse over the scores of writers and artists that also stayed
over the years while you browse the many shops of locally produced works.
Despite its huge appeal to tourists and settlers alike the village has
managed to retain much of its traditional character and unmistakable
relaxed way of life.
Calahonda is a busy resort with a rustic flavour and is very much centred on the holidaymaker, with four golf courses, tennis courts, a shimmering coastline offering an array of watersports, shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants that have a truly global take on cuisine. Tucked between Marbella and Fuengirola, this pretty, purpose built resort is in an ideal location to explore the Costa Del Sol coastline and discover the charming cities of Andalusia and Seville.
Should you wish to explore the area further,
take a trip to the hills with fabulous views to Gibraltar and beyond on a
clear day. Worth a visit is the El Zoco centre at the front of Calahonda
where you will find an oasis of shops coupled with great restaurants and
bars to relax in. By night there are plenty of bars for entertainment
which has a large selection suitable for all. The gastronomy of the area
is of an international theme, so there really is something for all tastes. Estepona holidays won't disappoint. Estepona is the Sun Coast's most westerly resort, approximately a 45 minute drive to Gibraltar and lies more than half way along the coastline to Gibraltar from Malaga airport. You're more likely to pass the time of day over tapas with local people than to run into hordes of tourists, although it is becoming increasingly popular, particularly with golfers.
It's hard to believe it, but it's true -
there still exists a real, working, authentic Andalusian town along the
Costa Del Sol. And if you love the soul of a genuine Spanish welcome, one
that's not been too coloured by commercialism and tourism, yet still
offers all the comforts and distractions you need for a great time,
holidays to Estepona will be right up your street. Essentially, Estepona
grew around it's fantastic fish market - if you're able to set your alarm
clock for 5am to witness the morning's fish auction, you really should.
You can always sleep later.
Sights to see include the clock tower, Los
Remedios Church - and chic restaurants and bars around the harbour.
Sun-seekers can take their pick from packed playas like La Rada or El
Cristo or secluded sands like Playa del Castor or braver, barer beaches
like Costa Natura, the nudist beach.
Estepona has maintained it's Spanish style despite the tourist boom – all the big hotels have kept to the town's edges. So you can watch life pass by in the pretty Plaza de las Flores. Pick up unusual bargains on the Calle Terraza. Explore the past at the Roman and Moorish remains and the seven seafront watchtowers. There's copious watersports, a horse riding centre and the Estepona Golf club. Or you could conquer the heights of the Sierra Bermeja - don't worry, you can drive the 10km to the top!
The beach is dark shingly sand and quite narrow. You'll find that the majority of shops in Estepona are clustered around the centre of the resort. Stores sell regional crafts, including leather goods, while the town's elegant boutiques stock a range of stylish fashions and designer labels.
All the nearby beaches are sandy including the 5km long beach of San Pedro which has been awarded a blue flags. This little town combines traditional Spanish architecture and lifestyle with a superb beach that is second to none for holidays. San Pedro de Alcantara is only 10km from chic Marbella and a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range.
La Duquesa is an elegant, sophisticated resort with most of the action centred around the quaint marina and is also home to La Duquesa golf course.
Frequented by Hollywood stars and royalty alike, stylish Marbella has long been the summertime haunt of the international jet set. It is renowned as one of Europe's most exclusive holiday resorts and easily rivals other classy heavyweight destinations such as St. Tropez and Monte Carlo.
There are plenty of good value holiday
villages and developments clustered close by, making cheap holidays in
Marbella within the reach of all of us. From the coast road, the famous 'Marbella
arch' staddles the carriageway - a sure sign that you've reached the
coolest spot on the Costa Del Sol. Here, at the resort's edges, you'll
find better value restaurants and bright modern apartment complexes where
many holidays to Marbella are based.
Marbella's many sandy beaches, chic boutiques, fine restaurants and enchanting 16th century old town has made it a favourite. Set around the beautiful orange tree-lined Plaza de Naranjos, the historic quarter is a labyrinth of zigzagging cobbled streets while the port area of Puerto Banus is home to a vast array of luxurious yachts and motor cruisers.
Marbella boasts a number of beaches. The
most popular is the centrally located Playa de Venus while the Playa de la
Fontanilla is a more secluded stretch of sand. It's a man-made beach
protected by jetties. Beyond this lies the quiet Playa de Casablanca - the
ideal spot to really get away from it all.
High in the foothills of the Sierra de
las Nieves mountain range, holidays in Ojen promise secluded
relaxation in a traditional Andalusian village with the lure of daytrips
to cosmopolitan Marbella. Overlooking the coast on the threshold of the
mountain range, and surrounded by forests of cork, oak, and pine, it could
not be more different to the nearby resorts. Its narrow streets and white
cubist houses indicate its Arabic origins, while for decades, the
villagers have preserved the special local traditions. Look out for
wonders of nature like the protected white Hispanic Goat and the Royal
Eagle, and exquisite regional dishes including tapas and Iberian ham.
Look for Ojen's 15th century church that was
once an Arabic mosque, its famous Los Chorros fountain, and the ruins of
the Moorish castle in a field overlooking the village. Look out too for
the pinsapo, a rare tree native to the area that only exists in the Sierra
de las Nieves mountain range. |
