A long, narrow, gravelled lane leads to Jack’s cottage; it’s the reason the cottage has retained its peaceful, traditional charm. Located on the banks of the River Blackwater, which is famed for its natural beauty, the variety of its wildlife and the fishing, the 300 year old fisherman's cottage is secluded and romantic, perfect for a get away from it all holiday. Once at the cottage the loudest sounds you will hear are made by the pheasants in the surrounding fields or the cormorants on the river. As one of our clients put it, the bird song is the perfect soundtrack to unwind to in this idyllic cottage and garden. Recently renovated, the cottage will allow you to rediscover life’s simple pleasures. It has been carefully decorated to preserve the old world atmosphere but has all modern conveniences. Spacious and welcoming with a wood burning stove in the dining room and electric heating throughout the rest of the rooms. The brass beds under the thatched roof make for restful sleeping. There is a well-equipped kitchen and utility room. The most recent renovation took place in the bathroom, which now has a roll top bath and wet room with under floor heating. The peaceful, well tended garden has access to the riverbank, which is a perfect retreat for nature lovers, bird watchers, artists and walkers. We have built a hide by the river to improve wildlife watching, in particular, for seeing the local otters. Bed linen and towels are included in the price, as well as start up amounts of household items such as cleaning products and basics for the kitchen and fuel for the wood burning stove. (List available) Well-behaved pets are welcome.
You will find plenty to do nearby, if you can tear yourself away from the cottage. There are abundant beaches and coves to explore, mountains and hills to be climbed. Historic towns and castles to be visited and many a memorable meal to enjoy. There are plenty of opportunities to sample Irish culture as there are Irish music pubs and an Irish speaking area nearby.
