The quaint village of Frigiliana provides a nice contrast to life on the beach with its traditional whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. For many, the small village of Frigiliana is, quite simply, quintessential Andalucia. Perched high up on a rocky hilltop, Frigiliana is a traditional, whitewashed Spanish village complete with steep cobbled streets, Moorish houses and colourful flowers that cascade gracefully over wrought iron balconies. The village's picturesque location provides a peaceful and relaxed backdrop for those looking to engage with real Spain.

With breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea, the Almijara nature reserve and the eastern Malaga coast, Frigiliana is one of the most picturesque villages in Andalusia. Set amongst the mountains of the Sierra Almijara, this beautiful area of sunny hills and pretty villages is filled with avocado, mango and cane plantations as well as olives, almonds and vineyards. Frigiliana itself has a rich history and beautiful scenery but all around it are places to visit that are just as fascinating.

Voted the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority, Frigiliana is also important from an historical viewpoint. El Fuerte, the hill that climbs above the village, was the scene of the final bloody defeat of the Moors of La Axarquía in their 1569 rebellion. The hill is topped by scanty remains of a ruined fort from which some of the Moors reputedly threw themselves rather than be killed or captured by the Spanish. It is said that bones and rusted weapons dating from this encounter still lie among the scrub on El Fuerte.

The village itself is a tangle of narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies filled with planters of brilliant red geraniums. Small plazas provide shady seating while the village bars are popular with visitors who come here to taste the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.

Of the four or five historic-artistic buildings in Frigiliana there is the outstanding parish church of San Antonio, built in the 17th century (1676) and reformed the following century. It consists of three naves separated by pilasters and covered in a wooden armour up to the transept, where there is a semi-espheric vault crowned with a lantern. The front is simple, with an arch stretched over a shield of Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás. The bell tower has the singularity in which the last two bodies of three present double arches.

In the old part of town there is also a building which was a real silo of the ancient granaries, built in 1767, and the palace of the counts of Frigiliana, a farmstead from the 16th century, which later would be converted in to an ingenuous sugar refinery.

In certain squares and streets of the old part of town, twelve glassed ceramic mosaics have been placed which tell the story, in the form of Romance, of the history of the Moorish rebellion in this town. The artistic creation is due to two craftswomen, the potter Amparo Ruiz de Luna and the glass painting artist Pilar García Millán.

Frigiliana is best explored by foot. There are several buses a day that run from Nerja or, alternatively, leave your car at the car park at the bottom of the hill.
