The Costa Tropical of Granada province boasts particularly picturesque beaches and it is easier to get away from the crowds. Mountains run right down to the sea and the coastline is a series of coves and promontories.
There is La Herradura which is pretty and unspoilt
and located betwen the two attractive promontories of Punta de la Mona
and Cerro Gordo
Nearby in a protected cove east of Punta de la Mona is the impressive
Marina del Este yacht harbour. Water sports and scuba diving are popular
here, thanks to the variety of sea life and clarity of the water.
Many tourists are starting to head east towards Costa Tropical where you can still find old Spain with small charming fishing villages and white mountain villages. One popular spot is the old town of Almuñécar born on a piece of land jutting out between the Rio Verde and Rio Seco. This land now separates Almunecar's principal beaches of Playa Puerta del Mar (Rio Verde) and, to the west of the town centre, the Playa San Cristóbal (Rio Seco). The two beaches are backed by cliffs supporting an Arab citadel and three large rocks jutting out to sea.
Granada is located in the eastern part of Andalucia at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains only 100 km away from the Mediterranean Sea. The town is also located near Sevilla and Malaga and is within four hours drive of Madrid. It is one of the eight regional capitals of Andalusia and the town has a population of nearly 300.000. Granada has a great diversity in its climate from a sunny Mediterranean summer to rain and snow in the winter. The Sierra Nevada mountain range is a popular ski holiday destination.
Granada's interesting history is still very visible in the town where you can find famous monuments like Alhambra and Generalife (fortress and palace) or the zone Albaicin with its mixture of typical Mujahardin and Spanish architecture.
